This story discusses the importance of smoke alarms, practice fire drills at home, memorizing addresses and phone numbers of fire departments, flammable products, cooking with adults nearby, space heater safety, children should not use candles, and other important important things for children to know. Jessica is a girl who worries about everything, and she thought that fire safety would be something else that she would worry about. After learning about fire safety all week at school she was more prepared than ever and it wasn’t one of her worries.

  • Integration with core curriculum: Writing
    • After reading this story I would have my students participate in a writing lesson where they focus on the parts of a letter. Students would write a letter to their local fire department. They would write about the facts that they learned and the importance of fire safety. Students will learn about the different parts of a letter (heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature) and then focus on incorporating important components of the reading.
