Motor Vehicle Safety Unit Classroom Resources
Internet Lesson Sources for Teachers:
Discovery Education 2 Day Lesson plan on Safe Driving
Education World: Lesson Plan: Dangers of Distracted Driving
Justification of Resource:
Although these lessons are both designed for 9-12th grade I believe 8th they can be adapted to cover the 8th grade NHESs. I found these two sites to be the best for teachers because they came with videos, quizzes, power points and discussion questions already made. I could not decide which site I thought was the best so I included them both. They each give a good foundation for a lesson and leave the lesson open enough where a teacher could customize it for their specific students. Also the nice thing about these lesson plans is that the standards are already included at the bottom of each lesson plan.
A Source for Guardians:
StateFarm Teen Driver Safety
Justification of Resource:
This website has great resources for parents and students to explore. It has tips on how parents can help their teen learn to drive and what conversations to have with teens about distracted driving and driving under the influence. I found this website to be the best resource because it has 3 difference simulators and app trackers that students can practice with and parents can keep stats on their student. I would send a newsletter home to parents introducing this site. Since I would plan on doing this unit with 8th graders I would emphasize to the parents that the student learn habits from watching their parents driving so setting a good example and talking about driving safety is a good place to start.
