Hyigene for Kindergarten – Nonfiction Book Resource

Germs Are Not For Sharing

Verdick, Elizabeth, and Marieka Heinlen. Germs Are Not For Sharing. Minneapolis: Free Spirit, 2006. Print.

Germs Are Not For Sharing is a short and sweet nonfiction book that shows as well as tells young students how their daily hygiene should look and how to not spread germs. This was the best book because it is nonfiction but the content is still comprehensible for young students. The book is also simple to look at and very direct in its message so it really gets the point across without any fluff. However, it is still a fun read! I can integrate this book by having students complete their own nonfiction piece in their literacy journals.

NHES:

NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

PHW 1.2.11: Identify different ways that disease-causing germs are transmitted. (HBO 6)

PWH 1.2.12: Identify different ways to prevent the spread of germs that cause common infectious diseases. (HBO 6)

Core Integration:

Following this read aloud and discussion about hygiene, students will be instructed to create their own short nonfiction piece where they will use drawings and writing to instruct an audience to do something (much like the text that we had just read). Examples: Healthy food choices, pets you can own etc…

Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2

Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
