Popular Film:
Full House – S 8 E 24 – Michelle Rides Again
Producer: Warner Bros
Year: 1995
Length: 22:35
Rating: TV-G
Description: In this episode, Michelle suffers from a brain injury when she falls off her horse. This is an entertaining way for students to learn about brain injuries and the different forms it can take. This also integrates memory loss, which is one symptom of brain injury. I think that the students would like Full House and enjoy learning about brain injury in this entertaining way. This could be a good introduction to brain injury since it loosely talks about brain injuries and the affects of this particular brain injury.
Review: This episode touches on a mild brain injury and one scenario for how they can occur. It focuses a lot on the symptom of memory loss, as Michelle loses her memory of her family and her life. The episode also has other storylines incorporated, which could either be skipped or simply viewed as an entertaining storyline. In the end Michelle ultimately regains her memory. This could lead into a discussion about traumatic brain injuries and when and if people regain their memory eventually.
Integration:
Core area: Writing
Description: I would incorporate a short writing assignment for students to complete after watching this episode of Full House. The students will write about what happened to Michelle in the episode and describe how it affected her. They will also state any questions they have about brain injuries, which would be answered in our unit. We would focus on adding details about the episode in their writing, which would strengthen their writing.
