- Internet Source for Students: (NEDA) National Eating Disorders Association
- https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/
- https://kidshealth.org/
- I really like this website because it has a lot of information. It was hard for me to decide on just one so I put two of them down. The kids’ health website has a specific teen section and once you’re on the teen site you click on the “mind” tab and there is a body image section. There are different topics to explore including eating disorders. Since I chose 6th grade, the teen site would be a good pick for this age group. With either website, I could have student’s get into groups and assign each one an eating disorder to research and then have them present it to the class.
- Internet Source for Teachers: (NEDA) National Eating Disorder Association & Scholastic
- https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/ https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/body-image/
- I am keeping the website I used for student’s, for teachers as well because it has some great resources for educators. It has an educator tool kit, which I downloaded and has lots of useful information on eating disorders and how to support students. I picked the scholastic site because I really liked the lesson plan activity it provided and it was geared towards 6-8 grade so it fits in with my age group.
- Internet Source for Parents: (NEDA) National Eating Disorders Association
- https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/
- Once again, I am using the NEDA website. It’s very resourceful and has a parent tool kit, which is similar to the educator one, but provides more information on how to be supportive and finding possible treatments for friends and/or family.
Core Integration:
For a Science Lesson, I would like to have the students use the websites to look up information on how eating disorders can affect your body and health consequences that can happen. How does anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating affect your body, growth, organs, etc. I may make a worksheet with certain questions or just have them take notes on what they find and then we can have an in class discussion.
For an Art Lesson, the scholastic website has a lesson plan that I would like to use. It has the students use magazines to cut up images to make a collage. The activity would be great for building self-acceptance.
