Brief Description: These two Arthur episodes talk about the aftermath of a hurricane and how everyone must cope. When a hurricane hits their hometown, the entire community is affected and they all must learn how to get their town back to normal. Arthur and his friends experience many emotions and learn that during disaster situations it is important to get help from others and to help others. Arthur and his friends learn how to cope with their fears and anxiety. They become educated on ways in which they could prepare for other disasters that may occur. These episodes also included ways that parents can communicate with their children so they are prepared as a family. They provide questions that parents should be asking their children so that children are aware that these situations could possibly happen to them too.
Review: Arthur is a popular TV show that many children watch. I think that this is an important episode, along with many episodes they provide, that teachers children important information. They provided information in a way that was not scary for the viewer. The episodes also discussed the emotions that children face after an emergency or disaster and discuss that it is okay and normal to be feeling the way they might be feeling. These episodes also use easy language that children could understand.
Core Integration: Science Students will be able to participate in a science lesson where they learn how hurricanes happen and how they are formed. Students will learn how forces change the speed and direction of motion. They will also learn about the types of technology that scientists use to identify and track hurricanes. Students will then use body motion to show different types of forces and motion. They will learn about vocabulary that relates to hurricanes, such as, formation, motion, pressure, power, strength, and direction. They will watch related videos that demonstrate hurricanes throughout the U.S. and how they have effected communities. Students will then relate this new information to the information they learned through the Arthur episodes.
