Spongebob Squarepants: InSPONGEiac
Executive Producer: Steven Hillenburg
Length: 25min
Year: 2012
Rating: TV-G (This Episode)
Summary:
This popular TV show begins with a normal day of work for Spongebob, but the trouble begins that night when he cannot fall asleep. Spongebob and his best friend, Patrick, spend the whole episode trying various things to make Spongebob sleep or be more alert in the daytime. Through all of this Spongebob experiences real symptoms of insomnia. When I first found the episode I was hesitant on even watching it, as I know it can be quite goofy, but his symptoms were scientifically accurate. He experiences a lack of sleep, daytime sleepiness, loss of concentration at work, slowness at work/in activity, hallucinations, headaches, irritability, and even spouts of depression. The episode did not contain inappropriate content and was definitely targeted at a late elementary age viewer so it is perfect for 5th grade. For these reasons it was the best and most current popular video clip I found.
Integration:
After watching the documentary on Sleep provided by BBC this could be shown as a follow up or reward at the end of the week. It would be very fun and educational to view in class. To incorporate the direct instruction content that my class was working on while watching the documentary, the students would continue working on study skills by completing a Literature Analysis- Comparing and Contrasting graphic organizer. I have provided an example of one below. They would compare the real life intervened individual with insomnia, Dominik Diamond, to Spongebob’s experience with insomnia. This will even give them practice in discerning real factual information from that that is fake.
