Silence is Not Golden: Full House, Released on: Feb 16th 1993, Rating: G Length: 24 minutes.
Video Clip:
This film is the best selection to share and make people aware of child abuse, because it is about a young boy who comes out and says that his dad hurts him a lot to Stephanie when he first thinks that her dad hits her. Stephanie then struggles with the fact he asked her not to tell anyone ever. She then tells her Uncle Jesse, who calls child services. Stephanie learns that in this episode sometimes it’s better to tell someone then keep a promise if the person is in harms way. This episode is ok for second graders to watch because they can understand the concept without seeing the action of child abuse, and will understand that it is OKAY to tell someone if they hear about it or if it is happening to them.
Silence is not Golden loosely addresses my health topic by having a student tell another student that he has gets hit at home a lot at home. Throughout the episode Stephanie is discouraged because she knows and he asked her to not tell anyone. Later on she tells her Uncle, who then calls child services. This episode is awesome because Uncle Jesse gives great advice to Stephanie who is feeling anxious that she broke a promise, and it also gives students an idea of what things that can do if they ever hear about child abuse, see it, or are a victim of it.
Core Integration:
I would integrate this into writing a small paragraph for the students. The question they would have to look for while watching this film was who are the characters and who is your favorite character? This is integrated as a writing piece while doing a unit on who, what, when, where, and why in stories.
