Unit Plan- Homicide and Suicide- K-2

This is a health unit plan to teach second graders about suicide and homicide. With the changing social media importance in our society, suicide and depression rates and rising in the youth. Teaching students about preventative strategies can make all the difference. These lessons can be integrated into other core lessons to make connections throughout the school day.

-Health Standards

  • 1.2.1 Identify that health behaviors impact personal health.
  • 1.2.2 Recognize that there are multiple dimensions of health.
  • 1.2.5 Describe why it is important to seek healthcare.
  • 2.2.3 Describe how the media can influence health behaviors.
  • 4.2.1 Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants, and feelings.
  • 4.2.3 Demonstrate ways to respond in an unwanted, threatening, or dangerous situation.
  • 4.2.4 Demonstrate ways to tell a trusted adult if threatened or harmed.

  • Anchor 2.1 – Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art-making.
  • ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3
    Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
  • ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4
    Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
  • K.Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems: Animals, Plants, and Their Environment- All animals need food in order to live and grow. They obtain their food from plants or from other animals. Plants need water and light to live and grow. (K-LS1-1)
  • ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2
    Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
