  • Core Integration:
    • The topic of food allergies can be integrated into reading and comprehension. The website has some student-friendly articles about food allergies that you could print out for students. They can read the articles and answer comprehension questions about what they read. There is also an activity where students design an “allergy button” that illustrates what foods are and are not okay to eat with a specific allergy. This activity would be a creative art project that could be done so students can show what they have learned about food allergies. The website also provides a short quiz that can be used as a summative assessment to finish the unit.

Internet Source for Parents

  • General Information:
    • Kids with Food Allergies: A Division of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/).
    • This website is a great resource for parents because of the many helpful links it provides. The helpful links parents could utilize are: new diagnosis, food allergies, food allergy recalls, updates fro medical advisor, blogs, how to find safe foods, recipe substitutions, nutrition, webinars, and safe eats recipes. This website can be easily navigated to find exactly what they need. To introduce this site to parents by including this into my classroom blog under resources, and put it as a resource for parents in my newsletters to parents. This could be a great way to let them know of known allergies within my classroom, and give them a resource so they can find ways to exclude that food from the classroom.
