Summary explaining the purposes and features of the app:
- This app helps explain the importance of hand washing to young kids. Through this explanation, kids will understand the correlation between having clean hands and a healthy body. Kids interact with a fun and colorful environment while learning why it is important to remove germs from their hands. Through this app, kids can read along and engage with the interactive characters and will learn through colors, movement, and sound effects. It requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with an iPad. This topic relates to our health topic because as we have stated before, hand washing is a very important concept for kids to learn at a young age, especially being in a classroom and creating a healthy environment.
Core Integration:
- This app could be integrated into Reading. The app asks the user to read along with the characters and learn what germs are and why it is important to wash hands. This app could be used by all the students in the class, either all at the same time or it could be an option for students to do after they have finished other assigned work. It could really help students read and comprehend what they are reading along with understanding what germs are and the importance of hand washing. There could also be a “follow up” assignment for the students to do individually or with partners after they have finished using the app. To follow up and check for comprehension students could complete a worksheet (younger students can respond orally) that asks students to recall various cases where Doc-Fu told readers to wash their hands. Older students who have more experience with writing (2nd grade) could be asked to follow up by writing a short story about another case where Doc-Fu might get involved and what we might say about the scenario.
