Kindergarten Weather Safety Internet Resources

Internet Resources For Kindergarten Students, Parents, and Teachers

Internet Source For Students

General Information:

Planit Now: Young Meteorologist Program

This website takes the students through an interactive game and quest called the Severe Weather Preparedness Adventure. This would work great in a Kindergarten classroom because there is no reading about the weather, the meteorologists talk you through the game and explain in kid friendly, and scientific language what the types of weather are and what to do if a severe weather storm hits. The game takes you through and interactive playing board as well as interactive scenarios where students create preparedness kits or collect items that will be useful in order to survive. This game is very engaging and is sponsored by the national weather service, so it give real life scenarios and thoroughly explains what to do in the situations. I would allow students to use this website during computer lab so that each student has a chance to play and go through each module. If students had free time I would also allow them to access this game because it is very important that they finish the entire game to learn as much as possible and practice what to do during severe weather.

Core Integration:

I would integrate this interactive website with science in the classroom. Weather is a huge phenomenon and many parts of weather can be described scientifically. I would create a worksheet that listed each of the severe weather patterns the website goes through and have the students draw a picture of what each looked like. If appropriate for the student developmentally I would have them label the severe weather pattern with vocabulary terms that the meteorologists use in the game. The students would have the worksheet with them when they are on the website so they can follow along and draw pictures as they encounter different weather patterns.

General Information:

Discoveryeducation.com

This website had plenty of examples of different science experiments that involve weather. The website let’s educators choose tabs by grade level and topic. There is a lesson plan all laid out specifically for Kindergarten and all about weather safety. This website includes the lesson plans broken into sections such as: objectives, materials, procedures, discussion questions, evaluation, extensions, suggested readings, vocabulary, and academic standards.

This website can be utilized as educators to use for a lesson plan during their weather unit. The lesson that I found gave examples of introductory weather vocabulary, and discussion questions. The site offers links to materials, and lays out the lessons in a clear and concise way. Weather safety indefinitely correlates with science.

Core Integration:

There aren’t any “follow up” worksheets on this website, but some follow up questions could be:

-“What should you do if there is an earthquake?”

– “If you were ever alone in the school building during an earthquake, what should you do?”

– “What situations would require you to call 911?”

– “What adults can you trust in an emergency weather situation?”

Learning about weather begins as a core science lesson, and can easily be integrated with weather safety. You can end the weather lesson by discussing protocol in emergency situations and how to stay safe.

This website is called Weather Wiz Kids and can be found at http://www.weatherwizkids.com/.

This site will allow parents to read about many forms of weather and natural disasters and what they are so that they can teach their kids what to look for and what to be prepared for.

This website is the best site for parents because it teaches parents about different weather and earth phenomenons in kid friendly language. The site is meant for kids to be able to research on their own, so it is easy to navigate and is very concise when explaining weather patterns of terms. The website also have outside links to websites or videos that explain the terms in more depth. These videos and animations are great things for parents to preview and then show to their kids when explaining the natural disaster or weather term. I would include the link in my weekly newsletter to parents. This newsletter will go home as a hard copy and an email so that parents can access the link easily from the email.
