1) Title of Documentary: Break The Silence: Kids Against Child Abuse
Year: 1994 Producer: Brenda Reiswerg & Arnold Shapiro Length: 29:03 Description: In this documentary there are four different kids who have gone through child abuse and they are sharing their story to the world. I believe this is the best selection because it think it is much more valuable for kids to hear from other kids so they know it is real and that others may be going through the same thing as them. It may be from 1994 but it has some extremely good information to help prevent child abuse.
Review: There are four different kids and they each tell their story on how they have gone through a specific type of abuse. The first kid talks about how he went through physical abuse from his step dad. Like many other children he was scared to tell anyone about it and then eventually someone finds out and he explains how his situation gets resolved and eventually become a happy family again. The next two kids talk about their sexual abuse, one was abused by her step dad the other was abused by their baby sitter. They talk about how it is important that you tell someone if abuse is happening and everything gets resolved in the end. The last child went through neglect, and she talks about how her mother would leave her for hours or days alone when she was just four years old. In the end everything turns out fine once and adult knows about the situation. It is a great documentary for kids to hear from other kids on what to do if they are going through any type of abuse.

Core Integration: I would integrate this documentary into my English Language Arts section. I would do this by having the students watch this documentary and then including a follow up assignment. I would first do a “think-pair-share” that would entail students pairing up and discussing one major take away from the film. This would help students work on specifically the Speaking and Listening portion of this Core curriculum. To complete this assignment, I would have each group share what they talked about with their partner.

2) Title of Popular Film: For the Love of A Child
Writers: Duane Poole, Sara O’Meara, Yvonne Lime Year: 2006 Length: 80 min Description: This movie is based around abuse of children specifically one boy named Jacob who is abused by his father. Throughout the movie people and organizations help him out. I thought this was the best one to pick because it would be appropriate to show in a classroom of 3-5th graders and it has a great scene in the beginning of the movie that some students may connect to.
Review: In the beginning of this movie, there is about a 5-minute scene where a young boy named Jacob is hiding in his house so that his abusive father doesn’t find him. When he is hiding he has a pamphlet with a number to a child help hotline and he ends up calling it. Police come to his house and help him and then take him to a doctor to make sure everything is okay. It is a great example of a child telling an adult that something bad is happening to them and how children can get help. The movie is about how two women open up an organization that helps children who are abused set back around the 1950’s- 1960’s.

Core Integration: I would integrate this movie into my English Language Arts section. Specifically, the Writing section of this core curriculum. I would do this by having the students watch this movie and then including a follow up assignment. I would supply students with a piece of regular ruled paper. Next, I would give students 20 minutes to write their opinion on the movie. They will be asked to introduce the topic of the movie and then state two things that stood out to them about the movie and why they were important. This assignment will work on writing skills and educate them on abuse.
