Healthy Communication K-2: Popular Film

General Information:

Title: Inside Out

Producer: Jonas Rivera

Year: 2015

Length: 102 minutes

Rating: PG

Overview:

11-year-old Riley’s life is turned upside down when she and her parents move to San Francisco.

She needs her emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust) to help guide her though the new city, house, school, and people. This movie really illustrates learning how to handle and express emotions, particularly with a new life change such as a move. It also helps kids learn what each feeling is like, and how they are different from each other. We all have many emotions, and they’re all an essential part of life. This is a great movie to help teach the importance of communicating emotions clearly for healthy relationships, and to help get through life’s challenges.

Core Integration:

When trying to integrate this into a core topic, you could probably include this into a Language Arts lesson about Emotions. After showing the movie, you could analyze and learn about the emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Help them recognize what feelings look like “on the outside” by how Riley acted, and what caused her to act that way. Have them draw pictures of each emotion, with illustrations of their own experiences with those emotions. (For example, for Joy, have them draw pictures of what makes them happy, or specific events that made them happy.) Learning how to identify emotions and point out feelings and events that led to those feelings in text/ media is a great way to integrate Language Arts and the health topic of communicating emotions in relationships.
