Movie Clip: Personal Hygiene

Spongebob Squarepants: Season 2 Episode 3: “Something Smelly.” It was released in October 2000 on Nickelodeon.

  • General Information:
    • Unfortunately, I was unable to view the whole episode, but if you would like to find a longer clip, you can purchase it for $1.99 on Youtube. Having seen this episode before, I think the whole episode is filled with great content about personal hygiene, and the effects that it can have on others. I was only able to find a clip that was 22 seconds long; however, I feel that it accurately depicts what can happen when you are not taking proper care of your body.
    • Brief Description:
      • This is the best selection for personal hygiene because it shows what can happen when you have poor hygiene. In the episode, Spongebob eats an onion, which gives him very smell breath. As the episode progresses, everyone that Spongebob comes into contact with runs away because they do not want to be near him. This leads him to think that he is ugly. However, by the end of the episode, Spongebob realizes that people aren’t running away because he’s ugly, but that it is because he stinks.
    • Review:
      • Although this is a very short clip, it shows what can happen when people do not take care of themselves. A lot of young children don’t understand the importance of brushing their teeth, which is why this clip can be very powerful. This clip might come off a little harsh, but it portrays that people will not want to be around you if you are not taking care of your body.
    • Embedded Clip:
  • Core Integration:
    • I would teach this lesson in the category of Reading Literature. First, we would read The Tooth Book: A Healthy Guide to Teeth and Gums. This is a great book to read because it talks about what it would be like if we had no teeth and the importance of why we need to take care of them. This would lead into our discussion of personal hygiene, and other ways we can take care of our bodies.
      • As a follow-up assignment, I would have my students do the following worksheet. This worksheet has a space for them to draw a picture of how they can keep themselves clean, along with lines for them to explain their picture in further detail.
