Making Healthy Food Choices: A Popular Film for 3rd Graders: “Ratatouille”

General Information:

  • Ratatouille, Brad Bird, 2007, 1Hr 51Min, G
  • Ratatouille is a family friendly film which delves into the world of food. In the film, a rat has the ability to cook and uses a human to carry out the recipes. This is the best film because it shows many recipes in which use healthy food options, such as the title meal, ratatouille. It can give students hope that their healthy meals do not have to be boring or bland, but instead an experiment to be had.

Review: In this film, it engages children and adults in a unique way. It goes into the life of an aspiring french chef, but he has no skills in cooking. Fortunately for him, he meets a rat who is a talented chef. Together they utilize the french kitchen to create meals that are delicious. Disney made sure to show that cooking can be both an art form and fun! I think kids will be inspired to try new meals for themselves. With the context, students will be able to watch this movie through a health-minded lens.

Remy cooks a delicious healthy meal to wow critics in the movie, Ratatouille.

Core Integration: I would use this movie to provide inspiration of researching a recipe that the students would like to try. This recipe would have to have components included in the MyPlate. They would do a research project on if their meal reaches all of the components and has a yummy factor to it. As a further integration, I would like to cook a meal for the students to eat that is healthy and delicious! This would allow students to see healthy choices in action and provide context of what it can taste like.
