A Media Approach to Eye Health

Documentary

  • General Information:
    • Amazing Evolution of Eyes (Nature Documentary) HD  (44:55 minutes)
    • Published by: Science & Nature Documentaries HD
    • Date Published: April 25, 2015
    • Include the title, producer, year, length, and rating (G, PG, etc.).
    • I chose this documentary because I thought it would be interesting to students and be informational about the development of the eye. I specifically like how the documentary  highlights the different type of eyes and then relates it to the human eyes.
    • The documentary first talks about the evolution of eyes and the theory that each species is mutated and evolved through natural selection. This theory also relates to the many types of eyes that animal (including humans) species have. The document focuses on looking at the origin of the different species of animals and where their eye function had evolved from.
    • Snippets or possible Start and Ends:
    • Amazing Evolution of Eyes
      • 3:35 -9:06 “Jellyfish Eyes”
      • 9:06 – 14:11 “ Trilobite Eyes”
      • 14:12-16:59 “Insect Eyes”
      • 17:00- 19:00  “Verbirte Eyes”
      • 19:02 – 27:00 “Dinosaur Eyes”
      • 27:01- 44:55 “ First Mammal Eyes”
  • Core Integration:
    • I think this would be a great documentary to use as a tool when studying the different animal species in a biology or science classroom. I don’t think watching the full 44 minutes of the video would be beneficial, but based on which content of species you are covering in class and textbook, you can show the small clip of the documentary that relates. I would then talk about the different functions of the eyes and have the students compare the species function of eyes to our own human eyes and function. We can also talk about the different safety procedures humans have to use for our eyes unlike many species of animals that have eyes relate to the environment they live in. Making sure we relate knowledge from the textbook and documentary.
  • Standards: ( I included all the standards under NHES 1 because I think that many of these topics could be applied).

    • A brief description:
      • This clip from the popular TV series Friends is a section of an episode where Rachel needs to get an eye exam. She is clearly apprehensive and nervous about the whole situation. They doctor then mentions a few eye diseases he could have pointed out had she gone through with the examination and then gives her eye drops for her eye infection. Once she hears this she refuses the treatment to which the doctor responds with “Then I’ll see you in 3 months for a glass eye fitting.” Once he says that Rachel takes her eye health a little more seriously.
    • Provide a review:
      • This fun and energetic video clip addressed the need to get an eye checkup. It is fun and uses humor to demonstrate how one should not be weary of eye examinations. In Fact it points out that eye examinations can be useful to spot infections and diseases. It even makes fun of Rachel by saying if she doesn’t take care of her eyes, she will be fitted for a glass one in no time!
    • FRIENDS – S05E22
  • Core Integration:
    • If I were to give a lesson in biology and the structure of the eye I would then introduce why it would be necessary to get an eye examination and what  that would look like. I would then play this clip and ask my students a series of questions such as:
  1. What disease did the doctor mention that Rachel may be too young to have? Do you think she should have completed the eye exam to be sure?
  2. Once the doctor recommended treatment to Rachel she refuses it; is it a good idea to refuse the advice from a doctor?
  3. What did the doctor say would happen to Rachel if she refuses treatment?
      • Follow up assignment: Go and do research about eye examinations. I want you to collect facts about what kinds of diseases/infections one can find/ prevent from getting an eye examination, how often should one get an eye examination, or even what signs and symptoms require one to immediately schedule an eye examination.
