Media Perspective on Dental Health: Documentary for K-2nd Grade

Documentary:

Description: We felt this was the best short film to use because it used multiple different perspectives for practicing dental health. The film begins by allowing Elmo to describe the importance of brushing. Secondly, a young boy shares his experience at the dentist and explains some of the things that he did while there. Finally, Elmo tells the viewer where they can find out more about dental health.

Review: The film was really helpful, it touched on many of the important aspects of dental health and shared the information in a way that would be intriguing and exciting for young kids. We thought one of the more important parts was the video of the boy at the dentist. Kids get to see this young boy go step by step through his dentist appointment and is very positive throughout the experience. There are many other “teachers” throughout the film who all share important dental information.

Core Integration: This video could be used as a supplementary on how to keep your teeth healthy and clean. The video talks about elephant’s teeth or tusks and the different uses that animals have for teeth. After learning about animals uses for teeth in class, this could be a great video to show afterwards for strengthening and developing new ideas about teeth and dental health. After watching the video, students could write a small description about what they learned from the lesson.
