Integrated Internet Resources- Eye Health 3-5

Resource #1:

http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=152&id=1737

General Information:

I found this cite to be a very strong source that could be used when talking to children about their eyes, teaching students about their eyes, or having a child read to learn more about their eyes. There are lots of fun examples of the things that your eyes make it so that you are able to do, which really ties you into the rest of the article. There informative pictures along with text that helps you to understand all the inner workings of the eye itself and the ways that you can protect them.

Core Integration:

During a science lesson about the body, I think this could be integrated into the lesson. Students could be asked a question about ways in which they could keep their eyes safe. After hearing suggestions, they could then look through the article and learn and share out with the class new ways that they have learned how to protect their eyes.

Standards:

NHES 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

H3.W5.4- Investigate validity of health and wellness information, products, and services

H1.Sa1.4- Identify ways to prevent injuries in recreational activities

H7.Sa1.4- Describe practices and behaviors that promote safety and reduce or prevent injuries

General Information:

This is a great website that could be used for teachers when putting together lesson plans. This website is unique in the fact that all of the lessons are geared towards younger students and there is a large list of activities geared around the eyes and how to protect them. Teachers can pick and choose activities as they feel that they can be utilized best within their classroom.

Resource #3:

https://www.childrenseyefoundation.org/for-parents/

General Information:

I found this site to be a great resource that is very accessible for parents who have questions about their children’s eye health. The website is put out by the Children’s Eye Foundation, a credible nonprofit organization founded in 1970 who’s main purpose is to help children see well and have good vision for life. This website is a fantastic resource for parents because there are clearly marked tabs that could possibly answer all sorts of parents’ questions about their children’s eye health. Tabs include What Every Parent Should Know About Your Child’s Eyes, Know the Signs, Normal Vision Development, and so much more! There is even a spot that helps parents find a local pediatric ophthalmologist as well as additional resources and links for more information.

To introduce this great resource to parents, I would include it in the class newsletter in either May (Healthy Vision Month) or August (Children’s Eye Health/ Safety Month). And in addition to emphasizing eye health during these months, I would also have this resource posted on the class website and available at any point during the year.
