General Information:

  • Title: You Are What You Eat!
  • Producer: SciShow Kids
  • Year: 2016
  • Length: 17 min 45 sec
  • Rating: G
  • Description: In this short film, Jessi and Squeaks review a lot of topics that have to deal with food and food groups.   First, they go over what are the different types of food groups that we can place our foods into.  From fruits and veggies to grains and proteins, the show dives into the description of how foods are placed in each group.  Then the film moves on to help students learn to identify fruits from vegetables.  By describing how they grow and how they look, this is a fun way to understand the differentiation.  The show moves onto how our body tastes food. It goes into a lengthy description of how taste buds work.  And to continue on the topics covered in such a short period of time, there are two more: sugar and the digestive system.  All of these topics are great introduction for a classroom full of young students curious about food and our bodies making it the best for our topic of nutrition.
  • Review: I love this video as an overview of different nutrition topics: food groups, fruits vs. veggies, how we taste, sugar, and the digestive system.  This give an in depth overview of all of these to help bring these topics to mind for our young students.  I would use this video to start discussions about all of these subjects for our students.
  • Snippet:

    watch from 0:45-4:00

Core Integration:

  • To integrate this topic into one subject, I would use science.  I would have an assignment for students to go home and find one food that fits each food group that the video shares: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy.  I would then have them write it down or bring it in to make a group list of everything everyone finds.   Then we’d go more into how much students should eat and so on.
