Media Perspective on Dental Health: Popular Film for K-2 Grade

Popular Film:

Description: In this episode of Arthur, he is concerned because he has not yet lost a baby tooth. He tries to rush it and pull it out himself with no luck. His parents decide to have him go see a dentist who assures him that children lose their baby teeth at different ages and that his tooth would come out eventually. At the end of the storyline Arthur loses his tooth and his peers accept that not everyone loses their teeth at the same time.

Review: We felt this was the best popular film, because Arthur is a popular kid’s show and this episode focuses on teeth and dental health. The episode is a good choice to show a class because it incorporates information on dental health with a storyline about Arthur losing a baby tooth which many students would be able to connect with. Arthur also goes to the dentist in the episode, and he has a good experience which may help ease anxiety kids may have about the dentist.

Core Integration: This video could be used as a supplement to a lesson on dental health and teachers could have their students view this video as an introduction to dental health. This would make a good introduction because it is informational and developmentally appropriate. From there teachers could continue the lesson with a read aloud or a worksheet with more facts on dental health. Students could also share out or turn and talk about things they learned from the video.
