      • Description: After looking through many books, I decided that this memoir, “I have the right to” would be a great book to open up the conversation of sexual health in a middle school classroom. This true story is about a young survivor of sexual assault and her journey toward justice and healing. I liked this book because it is written in a way that is engaging for all audiences, especially middle school students. She writes from the first person point of view which encourages students to put themselves in the authors shoes. It is easy to read yet very thought provoking.

      • Core Integration: This book can be integrated into a reading lesson very easily. My first thought when reading excerpts from this book was it would be great for reading groups. While reading, students can come up with some critical thinking questions that they will later share with their group members. In these groups, the students will discuss questions, thoughts and predictions they had about the book. This can be a great read for students who are ready to dig into books with deeper themes.

General Info:

      • Description: After looking through countless books, the best one is “It’s Perfectly Normal”. This book contains specific content about STDs and additionally talks about other sexual health content, like puberty, sex, birth control, and conception. The reason I like this book is from the vast content, images, cartoons, and diagrams included. Additionally, the book is written in paragraphs, but includes bullet points to separate big ideas. I could use this book in various subjects, like science (biology/ human body), writing, reading, and health.
      • Excerpt:
      • Core Integration: One core integration that would benefit from this book is writing. Students would work in groups and could create a presentation about the subject they were given. Each student could write a section of the presentation through using evidence to help explain their topic. This would help build the students’ sexual health knowledge and build research/ collaboration skills.
