Nonfiction Book: Fat Head Kids: Stuff About Diet and Health I wish I Knew When I Was Your Age
General Information:
- “Fat Head” is a company that produced a documentary on diet, health, exercise and then took the idea into a kids version with the thought, what ideas would have helped me with health if I had learned them as a child? The book takes kids through different aspects of health, fitness, and diet and why it is important to be healthy as well as how to do it. It is kid friendly following the idea of a journey of a biological star ship, delving into the different health of everybody on board. included with the facts and knowledge needed to develop healthy habits.
- The book is written by Tom and Chareva Naughton and published by Middle Road Pictures (April 11, 2017).
- This book can be used with multiple other subjects such as art like drawing an exercise plan or science by learning about how the body burns calories when exercising. I would depend on the chapter of the book they are on.
- Here is chapter 1 of the book. It came across a little harsh to me at first but once it got into the information portion it was very helpful and easily digestible. I would consider skipping the intro when reading to this age group in a school setting.
Core Integration:
- This is a longer book so I would imagine stretching the reading out over the school year. After reading a chapter together as a class we can make a lesson to go along with each chapter with the lessons fitting into another school category. For instance, when the idea of calories/fats/carbs/exercise come into play we can add in a math lesson putting the correct number of calories needed for their bodies a day/ which foods can you eat that combine to the correct number and the amount and type of exercise that you need to add in as well. There are possibilities for art lessons, language arts lessons, etc.
