2nd Grade Earthquake Emergency Preparedness Non-Fiction Book

Non-Fiction Book – Earthquake Emergency Preparedness

Title: Earthquakes

Author: Franklyn M. Branley

Illustrated by: Megan Lloyd

Publication Date: 2015

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

Description: In Earthquakes the author talks about how the earth is moving all the time, but that it moves so little we don’t usually notice it. It teaches how earthquakes have a center and teaches many earthquake vocabulary words like seismic waves and magnitude. The book also encourages students to conduct their own experiments with classroom materials to help better understand seismic waves. The book talks about where in the world earthquakes happen, and a few large earthquakes in history. The book also talks about what you should do if you are in an earthquake, as well as things you can do to be prepared in the event of an earthquake.

I think this is a good selection because it incorporates so many different things. Not only can you read the book, but it also encourages scientific experiments, as well as introducing a plethora of new vocabulary words. The book also talks about different areas that earthquakes occur, which could be incorporated into a geography lesson, where is the school and where do earthquakes happen? There are many different ways you could add this book into different lessons.

Core Topic: I would integrate this book into a geography lesson. The book talks about different regions that earthquakes happen and have happened, it would be a great time to look at maps and perhaps have the children circle or different areas, even look at the relationship of those places to the school.
