Integrated Media about Gender Identity for 2nd Grade

Best Documentary about Gender Identity:

Title of Documentary: Gender Identity: Being Female, Male, Transgender or Genderfluid

Producer: Amaze

Year: 2016

Length: 2:10 minutes

Review of Clip:

This short video clip really helps define the different genders on the spectrum and establishes that no matter how people identify we need to respect them. In the video, a group of transgender or gender queer kids are getting ready for a Gender Identity Concert. The narrator helps define that being transgender means that some people are born inside the wrong body and they don’t identify with their body. It is easy to understand for kiddos and all of them will be able to see themselves in the video (cis, transgender, etc.) and identity.

Core Integration:

This video clip would be great to do after an activity about gender stereotypes. We listed in a previous assignment a group activity about role playing/exploring gender identity and stereotypes. Playing this clip after that activity would be great for kids to learn what these definitions mean and introduce to them that there is more than just two genders. This clip would also be great to play after a group interactive writing about gender stereotypes. . We as teachers can gather information about what our students know about gender identity. This clip could help support literacy and writing by writing personal narratives.

The best popular film: Mulan

Title: Mulan

Year: 1998

Length: 90 minutes

Rating: G

Review:

Mulan is about a Chinese princess who is getting set up with a man to marry, but she doesn’t want to get married to a stranger. Instead Mulan wants to fight in the war but this is frowned upon since she is a girl. She then sneaks out and pretends to be a boy and fight in the war. This movie would be great to show to a class about gender identity, since it shows a girl doing a “boy thing”. This movie provides an example that anyone can do anything even if it is considered a “boy thing” or “girl thing”.

Core Integration:

I would integrate this video in my class when teaching about different cultures. This would be a perfect way to talk to my students about different cultures and then link gender identity to it as well. This film would also allow the students to see what another culture is like and how it differs from their own.
