Title: “Recess at 20 Below”
Author: Cindy Aillaud
Date of Publication: 2005
Recess safety tips and information for when there is snow, cold, and school is NOT closed.
Description:
Students of all climes need to be aware to dress for the weather, especially as weather becomes more extreme and unpredictable on a regular basis. Even if the students are not
literally experiencing 20 below temperatures, the ability to dress appropriately and play
appropriately is still covered in this book and is conducive to classroom conversations on those topics.
Excerpt: “The cold takes my breath away and makes the inside of my nose stick together, so I tug my scarf up all the way to my eyes. The snow on the ground sparkles like diamonds and the air is filled with tiny ice crystals twinkling out of the sky.”
Core Integration:
I think one of the biggest connections this text will make to class is preparedness in terms of winter clothing for students. Therefore, the connection I see to a core subject would be math, specifically statistics. I would have students document (on a provided worksheet) what students are wearing certain items for the time of season. (For example; how many students in the class are wearing basketball shorts? How many students in the class are
wearing winter jackets? Etc). I would organize the worksheet into a table format and then
students can directly see the impact of what they wear and how many students dress well for the time of year.
