6th Grade Internet Resources for Recess Safety

General Information:

Useful Recess Safety PDF

This is a link to a PDF rather than a website since all the website I looked at were boring and oriented toward teachers and parents rather than kids themselves. I was thinking students could review the information on the pdf (which is kid friendly, simple to read and has visual aids) when they had a free moment or two in class. I could even print out my favorite parts of the PDF and make it into a classroom poster.

Core integration:

I would create a scavenger hunt for students in the form of a small worksheet in which they could identify key aspects of the pdf in a fun competitive way. (Such as; “find three safety tips for playing the blacktop area of the playground”). Through Collaboration the students can create informative write up on key points they found.

Interactive Poster

Here is an interactive poster for students to reference before going out to play. This can be used in the classroom to help students better understand playground safety. We can include a interactive lesson where students use this poster as an example and team up to create their own playground/recess safety poster.

Internet Source for teachers

This is also a link to a site that provided a PDF, and it covers topics similar to the one linked for students. However, this site is much dryer (also does not have visual aids) than the PDF linked for students. That said, the PDF is extensive (many, many, many pages) and covers in deep detail all aspects of safety in a recess setting, making it ideal for teachers of primary students.

Recess Safety Lab

This website provides many resources to transform your recess. This includes how to incorporate adult participation, positive language, methods to allow students to resolve conflict, variety of safe recess games, and many many more. This website is an excellent resource for teachers and it touches all aspects of safety topics for recess as well as injury and emotional social safety.

Internet Source for Parents

It was not easy finding good material for parents on this topic because the material on recess safety (for the parent’s perspective rather than the teachers perspective), was either vague blog postings or short excerpts from larger works. This was the most extensive resource that toed a happy medium between being long and dense to short and vague, while still providing quality information for a parent of a primary aged student.

Protect Your Child From Injury

This link makes sure parents provide children with precautions to inform their children about for being an active child. This includes natural disasters all the way to wearing the correct safety features for playing. This link includes a public playground safety checklist. This can be used by parents to ensure their schools are providing a safe outdoor playground as well as equipping their children with safety measures for being active.
