I Like Myself ~ Fictional Literature

General information

·       I like myself by Karen Beaumont and David Catrow

·       Harcourt, Inc., 2004

o   “I may be called a silly nut or crazy cuckoo bird – so what? I am having too much fun for anything to bother me!”

o   This is a quote from the book that I enjoyed because yes, the girl is having people call her names, but she is not letting it bother her. She keeps on being herself and I really like how that shows the student that she is confident.

o   I would integrate this into the curriculum as an icebreaker activity during the first few weeks of school.

o   I think this book is definitely geared towards younger students, so this book would be on the cusp of 3rd grade which is why I would want to have it for them in the beginning of the year, so it is a nice little transition into the 3rd grade.

Core integration

·       As I said earlier, I think it would be a good icebreaker with a new class, especially because some students might be new to the school.

o   A follow up assignment for this activity would be a “all about me” poster and I would post them in the class at the beginning of the year for students to learn more about each other and what they like most about themselves.

Standards

·       HBO 1: Establish and maintain healthy relationships

·       List healthy ways to express affection, love and friendship

·       Even though this book does not explicitly talk about self-identity, it does convey that you are unique. That you should not be afraid to be who you are.
