K-2 online safety nonfiction literature

nonfiction book: Stowell, Louie, and Nancy Leschnikoff. Usborne Staying Safe Online. Usborne Publishing Ltd., 2016.

Here is the overview of the book-

General Information:

Usborne’s Staying Safe Online non-fiction book shares many key safety tips to keep in mind when teaching students about online safety.  With an index that hits all of the main area’s students need to be familiar with, adults can pick and choose different subjects to focus on before beginning their class time on the internet.  Teachers can look through the book and highlight/sticky-note different chapters and subjects they think would be most effective to teach the class.  The book also provides multiple student quizzes to test the students’ knowledge of the chapter, focusing on those key points we want the students to take away from their time in the lesson.  This book would be effective to incorporate into a writing/reading time.  Having the students focus on the importance of the index page to locate certain subjects, and how to identify key ideas or important take-aways in the reading.

Core Integration:

When incorporating this book into my reading/writing lesson plan (considering staying safe online is something I really want my students to understand), I will begin by reading the book out loud to the students, while displaying the pages beneath the projector for the class to see and follow along.  During this time, I will introduce students to the importance of the index page, especially while using a non-fiction book.  We will hop through important topics like “Online Manners” and “Harmful Adults”, highlighting key topics and ideas that “I want to remember after reading this book”.  After spending time getting to know the Usborne Staying Safe Online book, we’ll hop over to a printed out copy of the books provided reflection quiz which students will take and turn in.
