k-2 Integrated Media Resource for Social Media Health: Common Sense Media

General Information:

  • “Media Balance is Important,” Common Sense Media Education, 2019, G
  • This video is a short musical and informational video about media balance. This video is meant to be entertaining while also informing kids about the importance of balancing media and activity. This is the best popular film I could find because there are not many options for movies and TV shows about social media that is appropriate for kids. If there are specific episodes that current popular shows made about social media, I am not currently in the know about children’s television. However, this video is entertaining and developmentally appropriate for K-2. It is also a reasonable length to be included in a mini lesson while still keeping students attention.
  • This video discusses the importance of balance in people’s lives. It discusses the importance of being present with friends and family, spending time being active, and relaxing and sleeping. The video explores this concept through the lens of social media and technology usage. To further the connection of this video, it would need to be included in a mini lesson discussing ways in which we can balance our screen time and what can happen if we are out of balance

Core Integration:

  • For this resource, a follow up activity would be best for integrating it into curriculum. As this is a Common Sense Media video, there are lesson plans and activities already created to correspond with it. Below I am hyperlinking a handout students could complete after viewing the video and participating in the mini lesson. The handout is meant for kindergarten but could easily be adjusted for 1st and 2nd grade. In the handout, students will draw what media balance looks like to them and write a sentence or two to explain their picture. Students are able to practice writing with this activity and teachers can assess student understanding.
