Going to the Doctor Literature Resource – 1st Grade

  1. Fiction Book: Daniel Visits the Doctor 
    1. General Info: 
      1. Author: Beck Friedman & Jason Fruchter / Publication Date: 2014 / Publisher: The Fred Rogers Company
      2. This book is about Daniel Tiger’s experience going to the doctor for a check up. He is supported by his mom and is reassured that the doctor is going to take care of him. Daniel also learns that if he talks with the doctor he can revise the help he needs to remain healthy. This story works well because any child can put themselves in the shoes of a tiger instead of trying to see themselves as another child. This story also has the same characters as one of the student online resources that we earlier provided. 
    2. Core Integration:
      1. This story about Daniel Tiger would be read at the beginning of the unit to develop a basic understanding of what to expect when going to the doctor. Students will be able to practice their identification skills to determine who the characters, setting, and main ideas are to describe the experience of going to the doctor. They will then use this knowledge and apply it to the Daniel Tiger doctor simulation.
    3. Standards:
      1. NHES: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
      2. H1.W1.1: Understand what it means to be healthy.
      3. H2.W4.1: Describe how family and friends influence health practices and behaviors.
      4. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

  1. Nonfiction Book: A Day in the Life of a Doctor 
    1. General Info:
      1. Author: Heather Adamson / Publication Date: 2000 / Publisher: Capstone Press
      2. This short story is a look into the daily routine of a doctor. It described a doctor who works at both a hospital and a clinic which is useful for whatever situation a child might be in when needing a doctor. It can be helpful for children to know what responsibilities a doctor has in order to become more comfortable with the professional.
        1. Core Integration:
          1. Students will read this story to gain more information about what a doctor does during their daily routine. They will be gaining lots of new vocabulary in this story that is content specific. Students will use their distinguishing literature skills to gain information from both text and illustrations.
        2. Standards:
          1. NHES: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.
          2. H3.W5.1: Identify where to locate trusted adults who can help promote health.
          3. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.6: Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
