Fiction Book:

Title: Safe Biking With Dad

Author: Rus Buyak

Brief Description: This is a book that tells about a family who takes a bike ride to the park, but encounters a few different obstacles on their way as they learn what safe bicycling looks like. Their dad teaches them to ride with a helmet, both hands of the handles, eyes on the road, and communicate with your riding buddies.

 Core Integration: Safe Biking With Dad is something that could be incorporated into a social studies section of class as the students learn what it means to be able to communicate with others. After reading the book, students could quiz each other on what they learned in the book. In this fiction book the children’s dad gives them instruction on how to safely ride their bikes. The children can learn from this in that they need to be respectful of their elders and listen to their instruction knowing that they have your best well-being in mind.


Non-fiction book

Title: Bicycle Safety (Be Safe!)

Author: Peggy Pancella

Publication Date: January 14, 2005

Publisher: Heinemann-Raintree

Brief Description: This book breaks down the basics of bike safety in simple easy to read sections that will keep the attention of a second grader. Each section has a picture that will help them to understand what they are reading.

Core Integration: Bicycle Safety could be integrated into a science unit when the students are learning about the basics of gravity and what it does. For example, riding a bike comes with the safety factor of wearing a helmet and not falling down. Gravity is part of what makes it challenging to fall down, so children need to understand the importance of wearing proper safety gear while riding a bike.

NHES STANDARDS

  • Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

S1.2.5 Describe how injuries can be prevented  (HBO 3,4,5,6)

  • Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

  • Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

S4.2.4 Demonstrate how to effectively tell a trusted adult when feeling threatened or harmed. (HBO 4&5)

  • Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

S.5.2.3 Explain potential positive and negative outcomes from a decision related to safety and injury prevention. (HBO 4,5,6, 8)
