We wanted to research this topic because we were curious if there was major benefits to assigning large amounts of homework. We began by making a claim with no prior knowledge on the subject that homework does not have major impacts on a students overall success in the classroom. From there, we began our research of peer reviewed articles on the subject. As we were researching this, we had sent out a survey for students to take, which allowed us to gather meaningful data about how students here at Western feel about homework. We also interviewed 2 people to gain more specific cases for or against having large amounts of homework. We noticed that many of the articles we read would contradict each other. One would tell us that homework doesn’t really have any noticeable impact on a students grade, while another would swear up and down that homework was the number one reason that students did well in their classes. One of the experiments was done by an economics teacher for his fall and spring quarter classes. In his fall quarter, he made all the homework mandatory, while in the spring the homework was optional. He compared the student’s final exam score (because it isn’t influenced by the amount of homework a student completes, unlike the final grade) and found no statistical significance for students having higher test scores after completing all the homework. This only sparked our curiosity more, as we wanted to get a definitive answer.

TL;DR: We wanted to find out if there was an optimal amount of homework per night, so we researched the topic and determined what other scholarly sources said about the topic.
