Discoveries

Through our research of previously published articles on the topic, we’ve found that most students find homework useless and a waste of time, but that completing homework has a major impact on their academic achievement. The results of a study done on a diverse group of middle school students showed us that no matter what way you look at it, completing any amount of homework drastically improves student’s success in the classroom. Another study we found was done by a teacher. Having no required homework showed no significant evidence to suggest that the completion of homework had any effect on a student’s achievement in the class. The results of these studies majorly contrast each other and provide more evidence towards concluding how effective homework may or may not be. In our own research we have determined that most students in our survey find homework to be important in one way or another to their learning of the class material. However, we noticed a trend that most students do not spend nearly as much time as they are assigned, doing homework. These results mostly went with our hypothesis, as they support that many people are assigned a lot more homework than they need to complete.

TL;DR: We found two contrasting articles that say that homework is effective, and that homework isn’t necessary for academic achievement. In our own survey, we found that while both are true, there should be a limit on how much homework students are assigned.
