Tricks for Treats

Tricks for Treats is a game that focuses on bringing people in the dorms together in an effort to create inclusivity. Our project started out late as we missed the first day, but we hit the ground running and created a game that will work in tandem with other events on campus and force its participants to meet people from across the dorms in order to gain points and complete challenges. By starting in Red Square and moving across campus in groups at their own pace, they will collect stickers and end with a pizza party back at the beginning.

Block Ball

For Venture Project 1, we were tasked to create a physical game that promoted diversity and inclusiveness. We at Square^3 (Square-Cubed) decided that building a lawn-type game would work best for what we all have with our skills and creativity combined. Block Ball brings an all-new innovative and creative way of playing games, with the barrier to break down walls and invite people into a community where they feel safe and included. B’Hub

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rLSCb6DplZrYwAyG2RM0V7n6u64IeWhw

B’Hub is an interactive app that connects the community together through weekly challenges and events. The main map on the app shows all real-time events with the event name, date, time and age range. The weekly challenges is a game that the app users participate in every week. The user completes a challenge and gets virtual currency through the app which can be translated into real world prizes. B’Hub was created to give people a convenient way to see the events happening around town to get involved in as well as giving an incentive to go by earning points for prizes.

Venture Project 1: Lickity Split

Venture project one (VP1) is always fast paced and exciting. We were given the task of creating a game that promotes and/or facilitates diversity and inclusion. Brainstorming from the beginning was focused on finding a group of people who were already focused on diversity and inclusion. We came to the conclusion that we wanted to develop a game as a tool for resident assistants to use to facilitate connection and inclusion within their hall. Lickity Split is a challenge-based game that continually splits one large group of people into ever-changing teams with “would you rather…” questions. This ensures that people get to compete with and against a variety of people and build connections through friendly competition.

Go-Ham!

In our effort to build upon the theme of a culture of belonging we created Go-Ham! With Go-Ham we wanted to build a sense of belonging within Westerns community, starting at the roots with the Freshman class. We built Go-Ham with the purpose of connecting Freshmen with the greater Bellingham community. The app specifically incentivizes users stepping out of their comfort zone so after you create your Go-Ham profile you can get matched up with friends or you can gain extra points by getting matched up with random students. Spoon Assasins

For the first venture of fall quarter my group took on the challenge of creating a game that made a community. First we wanted to make just a physical board game of sorts, but then we decided to be more inclusive and we needed the game to be on a bigger scale. From there we pivoted towards a game that could be played on Western’s campus. We decided that an easy game that we had seen played on campus’s before was a sort of tag game. Before there had been Humans vs. Zombies at WWU. However, this game hasn’t been successful in the past couple of years. To fill that gap and build an even more fun, inclusive game we decided to create the game Spoon Assassins. This game includes an online community, spoons and players of all backgrounds!

Strange Connections

Strange Connections is a self-driven series of challenge cards encouraging individuals to meet new people. Players draw a card at random from a deck, and each card lists a challenge to be completed with a stranger. Those challenges can range from “trade an item with a stranger,” to “stare into the eyes of a stranger without talking for three minutes.” After completing the challenge, the player gives that card to the stranger who is the encouraged to repeat it with a new stranger, passing on the card to reach more and more people.

Not 4 Solitaire

Bellingham is such a community-based place. We wanted this game to encourage people to go out within their community and get involved (hiking, events, or playing a game at a random location WITH someone they do not already know). This is a fun Bellingham game for people to get to know the community, their neighbors, and the city card deck! (Click picture above for google drive folder)

Keep It Relevant

Despite the fact that there are many games that appeal to a wide range of people, there is not ONE game that everyone can relate to, has the knowledge for, feel comfortable playing, or want to play, or is not a drinking game. Keep It Relevant fills this gap by allowing players to interact with people outside their social circles, as it is a card game that focuses on current events and viral social media. Even people who might not keep up closely with pop culture have likely heard about many of the topics included in the cards.

Taste Of Culture

The Whatcom County community or even the Bellingham community is growing at a rapid rate and is becoming more diverse. Our community has many different cultures, religions and beliefs, and we believe that it is important to recognize and appreciate each and every one. And what better way to do that than through food? Our aim with this Venture Project One is to foster a deeper understanding of other cultures and create connection through food; so we created Taste of Culture.
