Destruction of The Ocean

This is a comic strip about overfishing and how it’s putting all species of sharks at risk of extinction because their food supply is running super low. Although this comic is funny, it still brings up a very important matter, that not only the sharks are in danger but the fish that are being hunted as well, and that puts many other species at risk too. Overfishing is an important topic when it comes to the destruction of the ocean because it’s putting the whole ocean ecosystem at risk. The sharks are a major key in maintaining the ocean’s ecosystem, they are apex predators and help maintain balance just through instinct alone. With overfishing being a huge problem for these animals, they are both being starved and overfished themselves, nearly 100 million sharks are killed each year, many of them being hunted because of the value of their fins. As I stated earlier, not only are sharks at risk of being overfished but the animals they rely on are being overfished as well, nearly 1 trillion fish are caught in the wild and killed every year, and this number was the minimum, the maximum estimate is almost 3 trillion, that’s not counting marine mammals such as whales and dolphins, also a food source for sharks. Imagine if in a year, 3 trillion people died, that’s nearly 40% of the world’s population gone in a year, granted that the more fish than humans but the numbers are still crazy, and we need to be more considerate in how much we fish and if it’s worth possibly loses many other species at the same time. Sharks aren’t the only species that needs to hunt other fish, eels, piranhas, barracudas, are just a few of the commonly known examples.
