Political Cartoons

Setting: These political cartoons were published on the UW website as a Political News Blog. You may also see political cartoons in newspapers, anywhere online, and sometimes even on TV.

Subject: There are many different types of political cartoons, this one in particular was saying that both candidates for the 2016 election were unfavorable.

Political Cartoons can be used to make satirical statements about today’s economy, politicians, current status of policy etc.. I like to think of them as memes for old people. Political cartoons can also be used to send a message to groups of people that aren’t always kind. America has a long history of using political cartoons to display a racist message to cause hysteria about certain groups of people. For example the Japanese during WW2.

Participants: People who would look at these political cartoons would include journalists, history teachers, history students, politicians etc.. Normally they would read these for humor or as a way of drawing conclusions about stereotypes and opinions of people from different time periods. People who would make these political cartoons would be journalists, or anyone who wants to make a statement or start a movement. The person who made this particular cartoon is David Horsey.

Exigencies: This genre is used day to day. New political cartoons come out all the time because politics is always changing. Political cartoons are a fun way to get peoples opinions voiced.
