People living with disabilities are at a disadvantage in the world today. Not only physical disadvantages, but social, economic, and cultural disadvantages. This is because of inherent biases in the way society sees disability and reacts to it. People with disabilities are often not taken seriously, not given the respect they deserve, or just blatantly ignored. The world doesn’t have to be this way though. This bias can be changed through a lot of effort by a lot of people. Organized people working towards one common goal have proven time and time again to be effective at making this change.
This is the idea behind any organization. The more people you have working towards an organization’s purpose, the stronger you are and more likely you are to achieve the organization’s purpose. To change the way society views disability, we need to have more organizations dedicated to making that change. However, the change needs to be done right. the biases seen today are in place because they haven’t been made by people who know the struggle of living with a disability in a world of inaccessibility. That is why these organizations need to be created and lead by people with disabilities.
This website is dedicated to showing four leaders who understood this idea, and why what they did worked to help make the changes needed. These four people used this idea to push forward social change to change the way society sees and reacts to disability. They are leaders and founders in organizations that brought together people to achieve one common goal. these people are leaders in the disability rights movement.
