Who we are:
The National Society of Leadership and Success, also known as Sigma Alpha Pi (ΣΑΠ) and “the Society”, is the nation’s largest leadership honor society. Students are selected by their college for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. Today, the Society has over half a million members on more than 500 college and university campuses nationwide.
In addition to honorable distinction, the Society provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation at their campus or online. Upon completion of the program, members receive their leadership certificate and take their place among the top student leaders at their campus and across the country. Members are able to list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume.
Membership is for life and provides access to benefits including scholarships and awards, exclusive on-campus events, employer recruitment through an online job bank, and discounts on computers, textbooks, grad school prep courses, insurance and much more.
The Western Washington University Chapter:
The WWU Chapter began with an executive board in 2016. We obtained status as an Associated Students club during the same year. In the Fall of 2016 we extended invitations to campus students who met NSLS-WWU qualifications to join. Our chapter has over 450 members making us the largest club in the Western Washington University Associated Students
We work to provide guidance for high-achieving WWU students to keep them on track to get to their goals. We also provide opportunities for community service and enriching our members in all aspects of their leadership capabilities. We have hosted a variety of recognizable leaders such as Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen via live stream broadcast that reach all of our members and the extended Western community.
We plan to provide our members with a platform to meet like-minded individuals and start thinking and planning for life after college, so they are prepared to excel and feel confident and empowered graduating college and knowing that the world is their oyster, as opposed to scared and daunted by the pressures to get a job and join the “real world”.
We encompass the motto “Active Minds Changing Lives” because we not only nurture and encourage planning and thinking about the future, but we also give our members access to speeches from many different fascinating minds so that they can learn and grow from them. We are all about empowering people for the transition from WWU to wherever they can continue to use their active minds to change lives.
The Chapter works closely with the LEADS program and the Karen Morse Institute for Leadership. Our chapter advisers are Joanne DeMark, Ph.D., Jennifer Cook, M.Ed., and Karen Stout, Ph.D.
