Song Lyrics
“Life”
It’s a big, big, universe
So many dimensions
And unanswered questions
Not to mention
Life
What an invention
Life
There’s no choice involved in what you are given
One mind, one voice, one body to live in
Life
It’s a short, small thing we lead
With so much potential
Pointless or essential
Which one can I be?
Where do I fit?
Where do I stand?
Who are they to say what I am?
And how can I stay inside this awful world I know?
I need a way out
I need an escape
I’d rather be dead than to live in this place
I wish that something or someone could just take it all away
Someone take me away
This is a song from the musical “Starship” which is a musical about a bug that wishes he was human. This song is sung by the character “Bug” played by Joey Richter. In this song, he sings about Life and how he wants to know how he fits into it. This shows the genre of lyrics. This is an example of lyrics because it’s written in almost the same way as a poem. You can tell it is lyrics and not a poem because one important stanza repeats. This is the chorus. This gives a different connotation than if it were a comic or a short story because it adds that musical aspect. It is an aspect that is unique to lyrics and lyrics alone. The chorus of a song repeats the most important statement over and over again which is what “Life” does. I believe this is a really good example of what the meaning of life is because you can really see the struggle that he is facing which is what happens to most people in their lives.
