artist collaboration 101

So… why is collaborating with other artists that big of a deal? I mean mind-blowing art stems from solidarity all of the time! Right? Right! Nothing is wrong with working alone, but if you are only working alone, you are limiting yourself. My focus here is to keep all doors open. This is why we will dive into the reason collaboration for specifically smaller artists is SO important.

I feel like many of us remember the dreadful day in school when a teacher mentioned a “group project” coming up. Group projects can be tricky for loads of reasons. One group member does no work, one group member does all the work, while one group member takes the credit for the work! Nobody said it was easy, but there are reasons teachers as early as grade school required us to work on group projects. It tests our patience and forces us to see the mindset of others (I mean even science backs this up! Science? Yes, science!). But what were they preparing us for exactly?

Just like most of the education system, they were preparing us for the professional world. And I am not just talking solely in regards to a business setting. The truth is, creative spaces in the professional world do not rely on one individual person to complete a project. A film requires a producer, a director, a screenwriter, etc. To put on a concert you need the performer, a sound engineer, promoters, people handling wardrobe, etc. To release a book you need the writer, the editor, the publisher, people to market it, people to print it, the list goes on and on. I think you get the point!

Great accomplishments are often thanks to collaboration, and this is constantly seen in the world of creativity. I do not think we should wait around to get hired to join a team to work on something larger than ourselves. Instead, as a small creator, we should be reaching out NOW by finding like-minded individuals who are also filled with this creative passion. And then you take that passion and put it to work. Collaboration between smaller-scale artists is not any less important than the collaboration that it took to create the Avatar movie, a Rihanna concert, or the Harry Potter series.

This is the main reason I want to make the process easier for smaller creatives to connect. Agree? If you haven’t already, get involved and start networking through the lil MARTIANS service.
