Tutorial
The SPSS “Help” menu is actually very helpful and will probably have a tutorial you can use.
If you think you’ll be using SPSS pretty often in the future, when you open it click “Get started with tutorials” and follow along for more in depth instructions.
Otherwise open “demo.sav” and try some of this.
Viewing Data
Data is shown as cases (rows) and variables (columns). Columns use variable names that map to more descriptive labels if they have been defined. To see these labels select “View” -> “Value Labels”
Analyzing Data
The “Analyze” menu has just about every form of statistics you could possible want. If you are told to analyze something for class look through that menu and you will probably find it.
To get analyze frequencies in a data set, select “Analyze” -> “Descriptive Statistics” -> “Frequencies”
- Mouse-over shows variable label and [variable name] in brackets
- Right-click for more variable information
- # indicates numeric data
- A> indicates string (a text variable) longer than 8 characters, A< indicates a string 8 characters or shorter
- Select “Statistics” or “Charts” for more options
More Examples
- Select “Analyze” -> “Descriptive Statistics” -> “Frequencies”
- Move “Gender [gender]” and “Income Category [inccat]” to the “Variable(s)” column
- Click “OK”
Results are displayed in a new window. Click an item in the “Outline” pane (Output at the left) to highlight it in the window. Output screens can be saved or copied to other applications.
Creating a Graph
- Choose “Graphs” -> “Chart” -> “Builder” -> “Bar” -> “Clustered” -> “Define”
- Select “Wireless service”, then click “Category Axis”
- Select “Owns PDA”, then click “Define Cluster by:” then click “OK”
Additional Statistics
- Choose “Analyze” -> “Descriptive Statistics” -> “Frequencies”
- Click the “Statistics” button
- Select desired outputs, then click “Continue”
