Meet Maya

Hey there!

My name is Maya Matsumoto (she/hers), I recently graduated with my BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Western Washington University and minors in German and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). I am a proud Washingtonian (love being surrounded by the beautiful Pacific Northwest) and a huge nerd, both with book/movie fandoms and science!

I want to use my science education and art background to better communicate science through visuals to peers and the public. My passion for science communication started over the several years I worked with the Pacific Science Center’s summer camps teaching students, writing curriculum, and supervising staff. I now have an Instagram and Etsy (@MWMLetters) for sharing my sciart.

During my time as an undergrad at Western, I was part of the Lee Lab where I designed a website and created illustrations for our work on Tetrahymena thermophila while assisting with code work as well. And as a member and President of our SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) Chapter, I also worked to help diversify STEM and maintain a community for BIPOC and womxn in STEM at Western. I now work in the Kodner Lab at Western as a REPS (Research Experience for Post-Baccalaureate Students) Participant/Research Assistant investigating snow algae. Check out some of the Science Visuals I have made for my various projects.
