Our project is revolved around the media and how media portrays mental illnesses within movies and TV. It is no secret that the media portrays mental illnesses in ways that are unorthodox, often glamorizing and inputting mental illness into scripts to push a narrative, often at the expense of people actually affected by the mental illness. What is not discussed is how these films portrayals affect how mental illness is viewed in the general populous. This is what we are trying to research in our project, the effect of media’s portrayal in the perception of mental illnesses as presented in current TV and movies. Our central question would be “How does the media’s portrayal of mental illness affect how they are perceived on the Western Campus?” We decided to narrow our research in a controlled environment to have more accurate results and it would make the data gathering a lot easier.
