Our research went very smoothly and efficiently, most of the participants were bought into the interview and enjoyed the process. We were able to make connection and conclusions in our data with the information we acquired.

Throughout our research, we discovered an abundance of surprising patterns within our data. First, we analyzed the connection between the songs and imagery described by the participants while listening to the music. In her article “Expectancy and Human Emotion”, Sarah Suave says, “…pairing between a sound and a past event can trigger the emotion related to that event when the sound is subsequently heard (Suave). For example, “Yours” by Russell Dickerson is a romantic country song, and the majority of the participants described their memories of being in a relationship while correlating the song with happiness because of these images. In YG’s “Big Bank”, over half of the participants correlated the emotion of “hyped” with exciting memories of dancing and hanging with friends.

Secondly, the connection between music and color correlation was an intriguing pattern. Stephen E. Palmer stated that “…spectral yellow and green (lightest) were associated with higher pitches, red and orange (midlightness) with mid level pitches, and blue and violet (darkest) with lower pitches.”(Palmer). In Demi Lovato’s sad piano ballad, over half of the participants correlated the song with the colors purple, dark blue, and gray. On the contrary, about ¾ of the participants associated Ben Rector’s upbeat song “Brand New” with the colors yellow and green.

The final question that we posed was about what song clip people liked the most. The outcome of this question was as expected where most peoples favorite song clip was within their favorite genre of music. Someone who chose their favorite genre to be Rap was more likely to choose “Big Bank” as their favorite song. However, there were a few outliers in our data. One participant said that his favorite genre was Rap, but ultimately enjoyed the song “Brand New” by Ben Rector more. Along that same pattern, another participant said that his favorite type of music was piano music, but he choose his favorite song clip to be “Yours,” a country song by Russell Dickerson. This song has no piano in it, but our Demi Lovato song did, and he didn’t love that one. All in all, we can theorize that a persons favorite music genre will correlate with their favorite music clip even though there will be some outliers.
