The Object Inventory Project was designed to challenge students to reconsider what surrounds them. Asking them to document 20 of their favorite objects, this assignment asks the maker: “What is the significance of things?” As a culture we are surrounded by things that retain memory and meaning, this project poses the question of how these objects function in the world and what happens when the artist recontextualizes them by documenting with a camera. Learning by example and researching and exploring artists who use this topic as an inquiry or point of departure from their work, students were asked to research, investigate, and consider the work of visiting artists Paho Mann and Peter Happel Christian. In this case the project culminated in a variety of interpretations of Object Inventory.
