What is the PEL?

The Primate Evolution Lab is a student anthropology lab at WWU. Work in the PEL is concerned with the science of evolution among primates, with an emphasis on biological anthropology and paleoanthropology.

Who runs the PEL?

The Primate Evolution is led by Professor Tesla Monson. Dr. Monson’s research concerns the evolution of physiology and the skeleton, among primates and humans.

How big is the PEL?

The PEL is comprised of ~10 individuals, including undergraduate students, graduate students, and professors of bio-anthropology at WWU. This number varies quarter to quarter as new students join and others graduate.

Where does the PEL source its remains?

The faunal and primate remains held by the PEL were donated to the lab by UC Berkeley.

Who can join the PEL?

Any student enrolled at WWU studying anthropology can join the PEL. Our members include undergraduate and graduate students, as well as bio-anthropology faculty.

Why should I join?

Some benefits of becoming a PEL member include: access to research opportunities, experience in Anthropology, strengthening an academic resume, networking with WWU faculty and staff, and building community and recognition.

What do members do?

Members conduct independent and group research, get involved in PEL and departmental events, and receive insight from other students and professors. Student activity in the PEL is self-paced, meaning members get out as much as they put in. Motivated students are encouraged to reach out to Professor Monson at monsont2@wwu.edu about joining the lab.
