Affinity Wall Homework

  • For this assignment, imagine that you work for an electronics company called EcoResistor. EcoResistor has not previously sold computers, but is launching a new line of desktop and laptop computers to be sold through their web site. They want to know how their competitors describe their products on their web sites, to help them decide how to describe the new EcoResistor products.
  • I have created a spreadsheet that includes the advertising tag lines for a sampling of desktop and laptop computers from the majors brands sold in the US.
  • Use these tag lines to create an affinity wall (you can make an affinity table or floor instead if you don’t have an appropriate wall or don’t want to use post-its).
    • Use big, bold writing for your notes and headers, as they will need to be legible in a picture (see below).
    • You should aim for between 5 and 10 notes in each group.
    • Make sure you create a header for each group. Headers should be visually distinctive so they can be distinguished from the notes.
    • If desired, you can merge groups using superheaders. They should also be visually distinct from both notes and regular headers.
  • Take a picture of your completed affinity wall. It should be of high enough resolution that someone could read what is written on most if not all of the notes.
  • Next, write a short report (no more than 500 words) that includes the following:
    • A brief statement (2-3 sentences) of the goal of analyzing competitor’s tag lines.
    • A brief description of the process of creating the affinity wall (one paragraph).
    • A description of the different types of tag lines you identified from your affinity wall. For each type, describe what this kind of tag line is like in your own words, and also provide a couple examples of that type of tag line.
  • Submit your homework via the Affinity Wall Homework submission page.
  • You will receive separate scores for the affinity wall and the report.
  • The quality of your writing will be a significant factor in the score for your report. Make sure your writing is clear, well-organized, and error-free.
