Grading System

Scores for assignments will be awarded on a 4-point scale.

For written assignments the following scale will be used:

  • 4 – Very high quality work
    • All instructions were followed and all requirements of the assignment were addressed
    • Analysis is thoughtful and yields valuable insights
    • Writing is clear and well-organized, and there are few if any typos, spelling mistakes, or grammatical errors
  • 3 – Good quality work
    • 1-2 minor issues
  • 2 – Fair quality work
    • 1 major issue, or 3+ minor issues
  • 1 – Needs improvement
    • 2+ major issues, or 1 major issue along with 3+ minor issues
  • 0 – Assignment was not submitted

For larger assignments, there may be multiple grading categories, with a 1-4 score being assigned in each.

For participation the following scale will be used:

  • 4 – Fully active, engaged participation over the whole class period
  • 3 – Some participation, OR was 5-10 minutes late to class but participated while present
  • 2 – Little participation, OR missed a substantial portion of the class but participated while present
  • 1 – Present for the whole class period but no active participation, OR missed more than half the class but participated while present
  • 0 – Absent
