Scholars Week, Western Washington University’s annual, week-long celebration of outstanding student research and creative works, will be held May 13 – 17, 2024. Western’s undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to showcase their finest academic accomplishments, highlighting the significance of faculty mentorship and student scholarship. Such student achievements include presentations of completed research, research in progress, creative activities and performance.
WWU’s Scholars Showcase 2024 will include the return of four events: the annual Poster Session, Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) presentations, Graduate Student Creative Writing Presentations, and Faculty/Student Group Collaborations, which features research, creative work, or other academic projects resulting from collaborative participation between students and their instructors. In addition, Scholars Week events and activities will be hosted throughout the week by programs, departments and colleges across campus.
Scholars Showcase 2024 activities to include the following:
Presentations of Faculty/Student Group Collaborations:
Tuesday, May 14, Carver Hall of Fame Room (CV 221), 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
This presentation category features research, creative work and other academic projects resulting from collaborative participation between students and their instructors in the field, lab setting, studio, or in some other collaborative setting or arrangement.
Poster Session (an undergraduate and graduate student symposium):
Wednesday, May 15, Carver Gym, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Designed to resemble a centerpiece academic conference event, Western’s poster session provides an opportunity to prepare students for future presentations in their discipline. Students share their outstanding academic achievements — whether research or creative work — with the larger Western community, family, friends and anyone interested in their discipline or specific project.
Three-Minute Thesis (graduate students)
Thursday, May 16, Haggard Hall 222, 10 a.m. – noon & 3 – 4:30 p.m.
Three-Minute Thesis, or 3MT®, is a research presentation event created by The University of Queensland that challenges participants to explain their research to a general audience in three minutes or less, using a single PowerPoint slide. Hundreds of universities worldwide hold 3MT events each year, including WWU.
Graduate Student Creative Writing Presentations
Thursday, May 16, Haggard Hall 222, 1 – 2:30 p.m.
The Creative Writing Presentation features Western graduate students presenting original poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and/or hybrid works.
Events hosted by Colleges, Departments and Programs May 13 – 17
